Lady Utopia Planitia, 2000 - 2008

We lost our little Persian cat Utopia today. She had been fighting lung cancer since the beginning of the year, and today we decided that she had fought long enough. She was diagnosed back in April after several vet and vet specialist visits, and throughout the last 5 months, she’s had ups and downs. Through all that time, though, we got to spend some quality time with her, which I know helped her make it that long.

Utopia was always a peculiar cat. From the very earliest days, I remember her being both intensely affectionate and yet often standoffish, not an uncommon mix in cats. In her younger years before she was spayed, Utopia would subject us to her caterwauling while she was in heat. She even once mounted up on one of our Pekingese, obviously confused about both her role and her species!

Utopia was a long-haired cat, so we would often have her shaved with a “lion” cut. This gave her a very distinctive sleekness that we think she really enjoyed. Once home from the groomers, we’d find her galloping around the house like a tiny horse, free of her massive coat and ready to race! She was also partial to catnip, rolling around on our floors, even scooter herself sideways around the carpet to get her fix.

In her later years, she was fond playing “Danger Cat” outside, hunting lizards, and generally just exploring our backyard. Sometimes she would even find ways to escape her domain and explore our neighborhood, but we’d always reel her back in before she went too far. Her favorite spot had to be the bamboo garden in the back corner of our backyard. She’d spend long stretches of time just laying out there on the bench under the bamboo, completely relaxed and free.

That is where she lays now, under the gently swaying bamboo, free from her pain and able, at last, to rest.

Why We’re Stressed

My good friend Jake asked me yesterday how the “pet botherer” was doing, to which I replied (I’m summing up here) “better”. As the previous post depicted, Unagii had to go to the vet last week because of his recurring back problems. Pekingese, among other long-backed breeds, are notorious for getting something called IVD or degenerative disc disease. Three years ago, he had a flare up and was first diagnosed with the problem. Then, two weekends back, his back started to bother him again.

The initial vet visit recommended non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs combined with Valium to ease the pain and help him rest enough to heal. While at first this seemed sufficient, he grew worse over the weekend, and on Monday I took him to Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Maitland to consult with a neurologist. The neurologist’s first choice was to do surgery to remove the hardened material from the disc, but on further discussion we decided to go with the conservative, steroidal approach.

What’s really odd is that I gave Unagii no anti-inflammatory drugs that day we went to AVS, and he only had obvious discomfort that morning during the visit. Since that time (and before he started on the steroids), we’ve observed no muscle spasms in his back. Furthermore, he’s doing much better walking around and appears to be greatly improved. Of course, he’ll be spending most of his time in his kennel throughout the next three weeks while the steroids do their work, and I’m going to insist more vigorously that he use his stairs to come up and down from the bed. He’ll be a little barky, but he’ll get over it. Of course, the remaining Valium will help with that.

Apart from our animal’s health, both our jobs remain somewhat stressful, though for very different reasons. We’re looking forward to September for some relief in that department, but as of next week things will only get a bit more insane. That’s when I’ll begin teaching at UCF with my 6 hours of back-to-back classes for digital media. My plans for the two classes are slowly revealing themselves, but I’ll really need to start making decisions this weekend or next week will be absolutely miserable.

Patrick’s continuing to work miracles with his SLD students, teaching them about the greats of literature and hoping that at least a few of them retain something of value in spite of their troubled academics. Its stressful for him to have students looking up in complete apathy and (sometimes) willful ignorance. Go figure!

That’s the most of it since last we spoke. I’ll be back later with memes, maybe some pictures of the wild-man look that I’m currently sporting, or my new chocolatey cell phone.

Bored, Cold, Lonely

Yeah, I’m pretty much over Rhode Island. I’m sure its lovely during the spring and summer, and there are some pretty cool restraunts. Nah, that’s just the diplomatic side of me talking. Rhode Island sucks. The weather definitely reminds me of why they call this part of the country “New” England, as in it reminded those pilgrims of old England. The funny thing is I’d actually consider living in old England, so it can’t just be the weather that bothers me about this place.

It could be that I’m on this trip solo, and the people I’m working for aren’t terribly inviting or sociable. Next time I have to travel up here, I’ll definitely need to share the pain, er, excitement with Patrick. He’d actually enjoy some of the cute shops and scenery up here. Me, eh I’ve had my fill. Tomorrow I fly home to Patrick, the Pekingese and Pussy Posse, and WARMTH! Seriously, its cold.

Oh yeah, George and Dragon this Saturday night. Be there!

About the Pekingese

Ah, the beauty and the burden of owning Pekingese. This particular breed of dog has the unique ability to simultaneously annoy and amaze us. Of course, by that I am referring to the recent incident involving a tin of ribbon candy which I shall detail within.

Motivation (Meta Posting)

I really need to develope a stronger inner-desire to be productive in all my endeavours. Take this journal, for example. I’ve had any number of anecdotes, opinions, and media reviews to share with the world, but I’m simply sat on my hands and posted none of them! How will you, dear reader, ever cope if I don’t share with you the story of the kilted-saxophonist at the nudist colony? Or what about the unfortunate incident involving the Pekingese and some ribbon candy?

Just a quick pic of the Pekingese Liberation Army!

Meet our newest recruit to the Pekingese army - Ulyssia! She was born on May 11th, 2002, and she joined us just over a week ago. Stop by and say hi!

Feb 02

Um…ok…so it’s been a little while since my last update. Well, a few major things have happened the since last time I posted. Here goes…

  • I started graduate school at the University of Central Florida. I’ll be working on my master’s degree in computer science for at least the next year or so. To that end, I’m now a graduate teaching assistant in the CS department and will be pursuing some research in natural language processing under Dr. Fernando Gomez.

  • I’ve also started at a new job. Though I’m still with Fiserv doing websites, I’m now spending the bulk of my work-week doing programming for the Naval Air Warfare Combat Training Systems Division. Trust me, it’s not as impressive as it sounds, but I am learning a lot about my craft.

  • Patrick and I have adopted YET ANOTHER animal. We are now the proud owner of not one but TWO male Pekingese. Below is a picture of our youngest pet - Uno.

  • And last, but certainly not least, Patrick and I are approaching our 4th anniversary this coming March!!

I think that catches us up to today. I’ll be posting some new material to the Monthly Media reviews section soon, and Jeff has recently posted an interesting essay about life and futility. But unfortunately, it doesn’t look like our webcam will be back up for a little while. I recently upgraded our system to Windows 2000 due to the fact that Windows ME is HIGHLY UNSTABLE! However, our Logitech Quickcam Pro is NOT supported under Windows 2000 (even though we bought it only 3 years ago). So, until I get another webcam, the Cyberspatial Niche Cam is offline.

Meet Unagii, our newest addition to the Pittard-Williams household. Unagii is a 4 month old Pekingese puppy who just had to be liberated by Patrick and I from Just Puppies in Casselberry. Unagii is so-named because of my infatuation with all things Japanese and Patrick’s compassionate attempt to humor my odd infatuations. The word unagi means eel sushi in Japanese, so we added an extra i to the end to differentiate the two.

Having just completed a whirlwind tour of the extended Pittard household, Unagii is understandably tired and shagged out. Look forward to seeing more of him soon…
