Media Mess 01

UPDATE! - Fixed the audio, though the quality still has room for improvement. Enjoy! Going to fix the audio problems and re-post this tonight, but the original is still up if anyone wants to hear the “rough draft”.

Well, learning from my first podcast, I separated out my thoughts into their various related areas for this go, hoping that I’d be more stream-lined and yawn-inducing. FAIL! Instead, each section has taken on a life-of-its-own with the first coming in at over two-thirds of last week’s entire podcast. I’ve also thrown in a hint of production by adding an intro theme (taken from the late, great Combustible Edison’s Utopia). I had an outro selected, but it just didn’t really feel appropriate. Maybe next time!

Comic Pick of the Week for 2/13/08

Maybe its all the animated Justice League I’ve been watching lately, or maybe its just that I rather enjoyed the Green Arrow: Year One comic mini-series a while back. Other factors aside, Green Arrow and Black Canary by Judd Winick (yeah, that cartoonist from MTV’s Real World in San Francisco) and art by Cliff Chiang accomplishes two usually contradictory goals in comics - touching, sincere drama and over-the-top, funny adventure. Though the comic’s never in both modes at once, it does manage to successfully blend the two from moment to moment, sometime issue to issue.

The art is likewise both dynamic and semi-realistic, colorful yet never glaringly so. The art conveys both the drama in its tender, personal moments through emotive facial expressions, and the sometimes ridiculous action and adventure beats with almost uncanny yet definitely comic body positions and scene construction. Oh yeah, and the covers (though not always to be believed) just plain rock!

Even if you don’t know the characters, check this book out! Its certainly given me a gateway into the DC universe and a particular fondness for the Green Arrow, the Black Canary, and their various sidekicks.
