About the Pekingese

Ah, the beauty and the burden of owning Pekingese. This particular breed of dog has the unique ability to simultaneously annoy and amaze us. Of course, by that I am referring to the recent incident involving a tin of ribbon candy which I shall detail within.

Monday night when I returned home from a longish day at the office (well, long for the week of Christmas) I was met at the front door by three wagging tails. Now, this isn’t unusual as usually Patrick is home before me and has let loose the dogs of war. In this case, however, the dogs had never been cooped up due to either a misunderstanding with Patrick or an incident in forgetfulness from our younger roommate Sean.

Now, I routinely put our youngest two dogs to bed at night, leaving out the eldest Peke Unagii. He can be left out because he mostly sleeps when I do and is quite well mannered when it comes to matters of the bowels. His siblings, on the other hand, are more active and less well trained, particularly his brother Uno. Given that, it should come as no surprise that Uno had urinated on at least two items in the house during his time of free reign.

Unagii and Ulyssia were not blameless, however. One gift that contained candy was found torn open (sans candy) and the contents of the aforementioned tin of ribbon candy was found open and partly congealed on the carpet. Lovely to clean up from carpet, sticky, melded ribbon candy is. Thankfully, none of the animals suffered any apparent long-term effects from the incident, except perhaps for being extra sleepy that night.
